Medical School Grants and Scholarships

If you are thinking of entering medical school, you had better get ready for the long haul. Medical students spend at least eight years in school, four for their undergraduate degree, and then at least four for their doctorate degree in medicine. It is not uncommon for a medical school student to graduate with more than $100,000 in debt. It is no wonder that most students thinking of entering this profession are looking for help in the form of scholarships or grants.
One option for medical school students is to pursue research grants. For example, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute will provide money to students who are towards the end of their training and are willing to work in research projects the institute is interested in. Companies and institutions are willing to invest in research because the results they hope to find from the research would bring prestige and national recognition to the company that funded it. The National Institutes of Health are another source of research grants.
Of course, research grants do not help the student who is entering medical school. If you are a minority or a woman, you will likely be able to find grant programs targeted to your demographic, because both minorities and women are largely underrepresented in the medical field. The American Medical Association's Minority Affairs Commission has a list of grants available to minorities for all branches of medicine, so this is a great resource to start your search.
Anyone looking for a medical school scholarship, even if they are not a minority, can pursue the options available through the Daughters of the American Revolution. This organization has several memorial scholarships aimed at medical school students. The National Medical Fellowships offer a need-based scholarship program to qualifying medical school students who are in their freshman and sophomore years of school and absolutely cannot pay their educational expenses.
Finally, if you are looking for help paying for medical school, talk to the school you have chosen. Your school may have school-based scholarships and grants available for medical students. These are often need and merit-based programs. Even if there are not any school-sponsored scholarships available, the financial aid office at your institution will be able to point you towards potential sources of grant and scholarship money. Depending upon what school you do end up choosing to attend for your degree in medicine, you can find grants and financial aid that are categorized by state rather than by school in order to reveal state funding available.
Remember, you are unlikely to find a full-ride scholarship to put yourself through medical school, but if you can find help here and money there, you will be able to take a good portion of the burden off of yourself as you pay for your education. Although the figure presented earlier for probable debt out of college, the benefits of holding a career in medicine makes the long haul completely worth while. Now you can look forward to job security and a very nice looking salary to pay off that debt.

Teacher Professional Development For Multicultural Education

Communication skills are critical for success in any classroom. In multicultural education, communication skills are even more important because students and teachers often face language and cultural barriers at the same time. Teacher professional development can help to train teachers to adjust to a multicultural classroom and foster a collaborative environment that is beneficial to their students and other educators.
When learning to teach in multicultural education, there are several important ideas that teachers must become familiar with. First, the teacher should educate him- or her-self on a variety of cultural influences in our society, and in particular the cultural influences specific to the location where he or she is teaching. Having things in common is one of the best ways to create strong relationships, and teachers can make their students feel more at ease by laying the groundwork for a successful team (team = classroom). Multicultural teacher professional development should include resources and suggestions for cultural influences that teachers should familiarize themselves with.
An ambitious end goal for a multicultural education program would be to restructure our schools to promote equality and acceptance for all students and educators. We may be on the way towards that objective, but there is still much work to be done. Multicultural education can be improved via changes in all areas of a school's framework - the curriculum, the way teachers teach, how students are grouped together, how students are tested, and community participation. The diversity of backgrounds of students (low or high income, native or non-native English speakers, feminist or male-dominated cultures, Western or Eastern background, and even mono- versus multi-cultural exposure, and more) should be accounted for; all students' situations must be taken into consideration. Incorporating these changes is a large undertaking and an ongoing endeavor.
Once teachers have a good idea of the existing cultural differences, they must learn to apply the findings that are relevant to their situation and they must learn to employ strategies to facilitate communication within their classroom across the different cultural backgrounds present. Even in a classroom that is not so diverse, it is still important for students to learn multicultural education skills because they will undoubtedly be in situations later on in life that will require those skills.
So here are some action steps for teachers when beginning to learn teacher professional development for multicultural education:
--Look at your current teaching strategy: what methods are you using? What textbooks and workbooks are in the classroom? What is the curriculum? Do all of these things incorporate components of multicultural education?
--Involve your students in your learning process as well. Ask them for their input about what they know already and what they want to know.
--Ask questions of both your students and yourself - find out how they know what they know already and where the knowledge gaps are.
--Look at the topics you are teaching/learning from different cultural perspectives. Then relate these topics to your students' life experiences and our current society.
--Explore the cultures present in your classroom and learn about what differences may exist.
Teacher professional development is a great way to embrace and learn about multicultural education. These topics are important for all teachers to learn!

How To Make Your First Day Of College Stress-Free

The first year of college should be a very exciting and memorable one for most individuals. However, it can also be a very stressful time because most students will be living on their own for the first time and will need to adjust to new surroundings, different classmates and more challenging school work and assignments. However, it doesn’t have to be super stressful; planning ahead will make transitioning to student life a lot easier.
One of the most crucial aspects to decide is where you will be living. Possible options include living in a dorm or sharing an apartment with peers or other individuals. Living at a dorm will give students a more in-depth collegiate experience whereas living in an apartment will provide for more independence. Housing can be found by reading the local newspaper or surfing local online directories. Often there will be a bulletin board on campus where students can post ads looking for someone to live with.
Make a list of the items that you will need for your new apartment or dorm room. You will generally need a refrigerator and freezer, microwave, cookware and a bed or mattress to sleep on. The rest depends on what you need and your available funds. If your finances allow for it, you might consider purchasing a couch, dining table, silverware and dishes.
It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with your future roommates.
Perhaps talk back and forth a bit on Facebook or have a phone conversation to get a solid understanding of the other person. It might be a good idea to also discuss some house rules, for example how the chores will be divided up and if each person will buy his and her own food or if the cost will be shared. Who will be in charge of paying the utilities? Having these guidelines set in place beforehand will help everyone to get along.
Buying text books doesn’t necessarily have to be super costly. You can save a great deal of money by purchasing books online; this makes it a lot easier to comparison shop and see which stores offer the best deals. It’s a smart idea to buy used books from other students as well. Both of these methods are generally more cost effective versus buying a brand new book at the college store.
Walk around the campus a few days before class starts and walk to all of your classes so you know what building they are located in before the first day of school. This will let you get used to the campus and have a general idea of where everything is located at. Also make sure to familiarize yourself with the nearest grocery store, bank and gas station. It will be easier to adjust and less stressful if you know where everything is at ahead of time.
Will you be using an auto, bike or taking public transportation? If you are staying in a dorm this won’t be as much of an issue, but if you are living off-campus you might want to keep a car. If having your own car isn’t an option, you may opt to bike and use public transportation as needed. In this case, make sure you have a storage area for your bicycle. It’s also a good idea to get familiar with the local bus routes.
You will most likely look back on your college years with fond memories. Planning in advance will make everything just a bit easier and less stressful.

Should You Have an Educational Rug in Your Elementary Classroom?

Submitted By: Jennifer Dobson

Teachers of elementary age children are constantly looking to find new, innovative methods to capture children's attention and get them interested in learning. Most children respond particularly well to visual aids and even better to things they can use and with which they can interact. A class of items that fits both categories is educational classroom rugs. For those of you unfamiliar with educational rugs, they are simply rugs that are decorated with various learning aids such as numbers, the alphabet, days of the week, months etc. A virtually endless number of themes exist. If you have a decorating or teaching aid budget for your classroom, purchasing these rugs can be a worthwhile investment and many school districts approve and allocate funds for teachers to purchase these types of learning aids for the classroom because they are a long-lasting and effective investment.
Rugs Help Reinforce Concepts Being Taught
Used passively, these rugs are another way to inundate the classroom environment with important information that children need to commit to memory. The more ways you find to present this information, the better your results will be. Since children are not all the same when it comes to the way they learn best, a variety of methods will help you reach all types of learners. Perhaps the child who has problems remembering the letters of the alphabet when presented in the traditional manner will quickly catch on as he sees the educational rug lying in the floor day after day. Each time he steps on it as he enters the classroom, its image becomes more and more ingrained in his visual memory.
Hands-On Learning
A more active use for educational rugs is to use them as game mats. How about a good old fashioned game of twister using a rug with letters, months etc. instead of the conventional boring colors. Kids will quickly learn to recognize the particular words on the map. Bean bag toss can also be played using educational rugs. With a rug of the alphabet, two teams compete to complete words using each letter of the alphabet. The bean bag is tossed onto the rug and the team must write a word beginning with whatever letter the bag lands on. The first team to form words using all the letters of the alphabet wins. Other rugs are available that are designed as custom games such as board games. Some of the rugs are modular, allowing you to expand the games as the children master a particular area.
DIY Educational Rugs
Educational carpets for elementary classrooms are available from a variety of sources on the Internet. Any theme imaginable is available and some merchants even offer custom designed mats to fit more esoteric needs. If your budget can't accommodate the retail versions, simple, plain mats can be purchased and decorated either by the teacher or even better - by the students. With proper supervision during the process, these mats can be just as effective as more expensive models and also will stimulate the creative process in the children, leading to even more multi faceted learning.

How to Handle Puppy Love in the Classroom

Submitted By: Jennifer Dobson

As a teacher, you will see what is affectionately referred to as "puppy love" develop in your classroom - and teaching in an elementary or middle school setting does not make you immune. Kids from kindergarten up through twelfth grade can "fall in love" at the drop of a tack, although romance in the classroom usually starts a bit later. As students get older, they pay more attention to the opposite sex and romance or puppy love can often become a classroom issue. But all too often, the budding romance can cause problems for teachers and other students, as well as the two 'love birds'. Let's look at some specific tips for handling affection between students.
High School Students
If you teach high school, you likely understand up front that dating and romance is part of the teenage years and all efforts to extinguish a burning flame between two students is not only futile but inappropriate. But when the romance is happening right under your nose it can be a source of disruption and can upset your classroom management techniques. While you need to remember that "courting" is normal and natural for your students, you do not have to allow it to negatively impact your classroom or your instruction. In the high school classroom, you need to adopt and lay down specific rules about classroom romance and enforce them when needed. Mutual respect is a golden rule for any classroom and for students of any age. This means that even when students are coping with issues related to their romance, they must respect other students and the teacher by focusing on the class and participating in the class. A good way to help kids understand this principle is by having a "leave it at the door" policy. This means that all troubles and problems are left at the door when class begins so that the students can focus on the lesson. Issues that arise between dating students should be solved after school or on breaks between classes - on their own time; the classroom is a place for learning, not for socializing.
Middle School Students
Middle school may be the most tumultuous times of a teen's life because the middle school years are the years where girls and boys are raging with hormones and experiencing puberty for the first time. This sets the scene for romance and teachers at this grade level should prepare for it. And as an educator, you should be waiting as a responsible adult role model to mirror appropriate behavior for them in the classroom. Teachers can be a source of advice and support as teens begin to navigate the new feelings that they are experiencing. Invite your students to schedule time to talk with you not only about academic problems but about anything else that is troubling them at the time. This is a wonderful way for you to provide guidance and direction during this difficult time for your students.
Elementary School Students
Amazingly enough and for whatever reason, kids are beginning to wonder about romance and the opposite sex at increasingly younger ages. Recognizing this shift is important, as is directing the student towards appropriate behavior. Romance at this age is immature at best, and having a strict policy of no-romance in the classroom is usually the best policy. Use this time instead to teach children to respect one another and that there is plenty of time for romance when they are more mature.
At all levels in the educational system, teachers must be prepared to deal with romance between students in their classrooms. Sometimes parents are blissfully unaware or not mindful of the issue, which means that the teacher must ensure that students learn and respect one another in the classroom - and hopefully this will spill over beyond their interactions at school.

Fashion Design Education? 6 Asian Countries to Consider

Choosing a country as a fashion design student is like choosing the perfect backdrop for your portfolio. Surrounding yourself in a country’s heritage and culture will not only influence your educational and well-being; it also has the potential to determine the quality of your design portfolio. Studying in the right country for you can build a strong portfolio that will increase your chances of getting a job as a fashion designer.
If you want to soak in high street fashion and learn Asian languages, go to:
South Korea (Seoul)
Go to Seoul if you want South Korea’s popular, stylish influence in your portfolio. Tuning into Korean TV programs on a weekend will be enough to give you inspiration. Their fashionable entertainment scene has earned the country millions of fans world-wide. With most of their fashion design schools carrying out their programs in Korean, you will need to prove your proficiency with your KLPT results (a Korean Language Proficiency Test which evaluates Korean language proficiency delivered by the Korean Language Society).
Japan (Tokyo)
Tokyo is recognized for setting global trends; it paved the way for world-famous designers like Kenzo and Issey Miyake, graduates from Bunka Fashion College. It is also the second most expensive country to live in according to Mercer’s 2010 survey. Studying here will cost more than studying in UK or America. Most fashion schools carry out their courses in Japanese, so be prepared to sit for a proficiency test like JLPT (a standardized criterion-referenced test to evaluate and certify the Japanese language proficiency of non-native speakers).
If you prefer to practice Fashion in English, go to:
Australia (Sydney)
To experience being a part of Australia’s fashion scene, you can sign up for internships in fashion like in ACP magazines during your study breaks. It is a company that publishes popular women’s lifestyle, fashion and beauty magazines. Titles you might be familiar with include: CLEO, Cosmopolitan and Harper’s BAZAAR.
Singapore
Picking and polishing your English skills while you are in Singapore is highly possible. As a world class commercial city, Singapore is a cultural melting pot where you can meet Asians of other races and improve on your English as you speak with them. Fashion in Singapore is imported mainly from neighboring Asian countries and also carries multiple luxury labels from the west.
If you are looking for adventure, go to:
Thailand (Bangkok)
Bangkok is a budding fashion city that has yet to reach global acclaim. But the talents of local designers shine through their street stores, usually managed by young entrepreneurs. Craft materials are affordable – which is great news for budding designers. If you are willing to learn Thai, you can pick up a lot of pointers from the locals.
China
While studying here, you can consider sourcing for tailors and suppliers for your future boutique. Production here is one of the cheapest in the world, which will give you a lot of room for affordable practice on choice fabrics. Despite public distrust on China-made goods and designer fakes, the country is still capable of producing quality material.
At the end of the day, the best country for you to further your studies in depends on how you want to develop your portfolio.

Method Validation Studies For Analytical Balance Precision

Method validation studies help estimate the level of uncertainty associated with weighing experiments that are conducted, in an analytical balance for example. These methods are based either on data obtained after following protocols for validation in labs and medical establishments or during various development methods. The practices and procedure that lab personnel use while handling analytical weighing equipment can contribute significantly to weighing errors and weighing uncertainty. Method validation studies help not only correct but also remove these significant factors that influence the overall precision of the weighing balance.
The combined data contains measurements that have significant effects, overall performance figures and scores that provide supportive evidence of insignificance. Validation studies that are carried out for the qualitative analysis of analytical weighing determine the parameters of precision, bias, linearity, detection limit, selectivity or specificity, ruggedness or robustness, etc. Precision studies can be done using data from either a single lab or can be based on the data collected from inter laboratory studies. The data is obtained by measuring the reproducible standard deviation, intermediate precision and repeatability.
Individual variances are obtained on weighing a test sample and these precision studies help determine the overall level of uncertainty associated with the balance. Bias is another important component of uncertainty; it should either be negligible in the lab or absent using corrective techniques. When an overall bias from an appropriate value is known, the traceability can be determined. Relevant materials for reference must be used for calculating the bias. Linearity of the analytical balance is calculated through the process of non-linearity and inspection. The balance’s linearity response to both standard reference values and test samples are determined. It helps establish whether the balance is suitable enough to weigh test samples across a wide range of weights.
The detection limit is an important concept that is central to validation studies. It is primarily employed to determine the lower extreme of the weighing range during the operation of the balance. Though this component of the study is not directly applicable to determine the level of uncertainty, it requires special consideration and careful treatment. Selectivity and specificity studies mainly address the potential interferences that contribute to the uncertainty of the balance and are also used to demonstrate the insignificance of practical effects on the weighing system. These interferences are added to the blank test samples and fortified samples to test the balance’s response to them. Ruggedness and robustness studies are an example of detailed multi-factorial studies where one or more parameters are altered to investigate the weighing precision of analytical balances. Ruggedness tests are performed to understand which particular parameter has the maximum and most significant influence on the performance of the balance and the levels of uncertainty associated with the weighing process.
Method validation studies for determining analytical balance precision need to be representative. Only realistic studies that clearly list out the exact number of factors and the range of effects along with the types of samples used during the weighing procedure using the technique of random selection prove useful.

Basic Principles Involved in Saxon Math

It was during the 1970s that John Saxon developed a teaching method known as Saxon Math. Multiple home schools have showed immense interest in Saxon Math and thereby, the popularity of the teaching method has accumulated high praise. Saxon Math is known as a comprehensive and thorough research method; over the years, numerous teachers as well as students have perfected it with frequent modifications.
Saxon Math is dependent on different principles. These are inclusive of consistent practice, cumulative evaluation, continuous reviews and incremental amplification. Hence, it is important to review the ideology of Saxon Math to have complete understanding of the method.
Through evaluative worksheets, students are assessed on various grades throughout the year. All worksheets are written with respect to what has already been taught to the student and they reflect his/her understanding of the past sessions. Also, they tend to indicate the knowledge gained by the student during the current session. This is regarded as the foremost principle in Saxon Math.
With the help of consistent practice as well as continuous reviews, the concepts of the students get clearer. This practice tends to start from the beginning sessions and continues through the later sessions as well. Every concept is learned afresh daily, and then more time is invested on understanding and practicing the new concepts to learn more about the involved intricacies. This principle makes it easier for the student to retain the taught concepts in previous sessions by practicing them and again. By the end of the year, the evidence about the understanding of the concepts is clear.
Elaborating on the incremental development, we see how a new math related concept is learned by the student on daily basis. The first lesson would be revolving around a new concept of geometry and algebra. They shall then undergo constant practice to learn it thoroughly. The last lesson of the day would include concepts of previous sessions so as to retain the understanding of previously taught lessons and also evaluate the interlink connection developed by the student as per his/her comprehension of subsequent concepts.
It is true that the initial versions of Saxon Math were critically evaluated pertaining to limitation of time for the student to be acquiesced with new concepts and then expecting them to retain comprehension of previous concepts at the same time. With the passage of time, this has been improved and students now have ample time to invest in familiarizing themselves with new concepts and practicing previous ones also.
Saxon Math is a teaching method that has acquired a lot of fame from numerous home teachers since it permits the teachers to organize the teaching pyramid efficiently, as the curriculum comprises all tests and other related information.
Popularity and easy management of Saxon Math is evident from the number of schools that have been adapting this method to give mathematics a reformed touch. With the help of this method, the students and teachers both can work conveniently, acquainting themselves with the new concepts.

Continuing Education

Continuing education is practiced in most countries and areas of study around the world. This will help professionals be updated to new trends and techniques, research and discoveries in our day to day activities. For some people, they decide to have a break in their education. This will take direct them to lose their self confidence and forget about their educational achievements. They will have hard time understanding some of the important facts in the future. For these, they really need to have continuing education to help them have a strong foundation of knowledge and skills. They could also use this in their profession someday.
There are available continuing educations for a variety of disciplines. This may be held in colleges, online or you can have it as both. Studying online is a great opportunity for people who have their strong internet connection inside their house. They could be able to communicate with the members of the faculty and students online. Online education also provides a platform for conducting seminars and conferences for people to interact. You could easily find your course of choice from the university course finder.
